Winter Blues

Ahhh, the Winter Blues.

 


Despite the fact that I am currently involved in The Hot and Fit movement, I am affected by this crappy weather. As I previously stated, I was born to live in warm climates (the country I was born in averages 35C during the summer, 15C during the winter. Oh, and the beach is 5 KM away from my house).

 


If you are like me, you probably notice some changes when winter comes. Carbohydrates are calling your name. Its like the cake is screaming “EAT ME!!”. I think females have more of a thing for anything which involves some sort of dough. As in pastries. At least I do.


So why does this happen?

  • Because the cold creates a need for our body. Need – for – heat. Eating, especially warm foods, is one way to do so.
  • Because of the tendency to shut ourselves in the house and curl up on the couch. preferably with blankets. A natural consequence is usually a decline in physical activity (might as well be a couch potato), following seasonal depression, sending us to grab some food
  • Because of short daylight hours. Argh, this is almost as bad as the cold. Much more depressing though. Research shows that the number of light hours we have in a day may affect our metabolic response and our desire to consume a diet rich in fat and sucrose.


So what do we do?

  • Eat your summer foods, only in winter style: i.e. HEAT THEM UP! Instead of fruits and vegetables in cold salads, ate steamed vegetables and baked fruit. Instead of eating cold sandwiches try making it into a healthy toast.
  • Drink water. Something I definitely need to work on
  • The obvious: Eat foods that contain complex carbohydrates. This is probably the most important thing I have learned.

Get Hot and Fit: Pushup Jacks

Greetings lovelies!!

 


I am thinking right now about the whole concept of global warming. I wonder if it is the cause for the freezing weather we have had here this past week (looks like its going to say the same for the next few days, too!!!)

I am freezing. This morning I went out to get into my car, however the door was frozen shut. So I struggled with it a bit, got inside, realised the windshield wipers were frozen, too, and that I didn’t even have anything to scrape off the windshield with (I left it inside in the garage). After about 7 minutes or so, I was finally able to drive off!


Anybody who knows me will tell you – I was born, created, to exist in environments which average 25 C annually.


Running is still not happening, which makes me wonder whether my half marathon or marathon will happen. I really am not chickening just cause of the cold. Its all ice here. I would fall, I am pretty certain.

Instead, I did INSANITY. OHHH SHAUN T, HOW I LOVE THEE!

Seriously, I can never get enough of these workouts. SO challenging. My new BFF Katie is already doing the MAX workouts, which you are supposed to do after a month or so into the program. I just peeked last night, and OMG they are almost 1 hour long!!! I cannot imagine that ! I am dying from just 40 minutes!


Get Hot and Fit: Pushup Jacks

Even if you don’t have/do INSANITY, I really recommend doing a move that was on Pure Cardio today called Pushup Jacks!


How to:

  • Start in Plank position, shoulders in a straight line with your wrist, palms spread wide on the floor
  • Tighten your core, keep your back straight
  • Bend at your elbows and bring your chest towards the floor, while at the same time jump your feet wide
  • Jump your feet back to starting point, while straightening your arms again


Reps: really depends on how strong you are. I am not strong, so I could maybe do 10 and then my form starts to slack.


On another note, I do not understand why anyone would go jogging with this outfit:

Pink Does P90X

This comes a bit late, I realise, but whatever – so Pink is also part of the P90X craze.

Here is what she said to Women’s Health magazine (January’s issue):

“Ever hear of P90X? My brother and his wife are both in the Air Force; they do marathons and triathlons. I went [to visit them and she’s doing P90X]. I couldn’t keep up with her — and she’d just had her first baby four weeks ago. I was like, This is bullshit! I will perfect this thing! So usually, I wake up and do an hour of cardio, then an hour of P90X or yoga, then a half-hour of warm-up [during show rehearsal]. I do that six days a week.”

What I like about Pink is that she does not bull$hit. I can’t stand it when I see a magazine belonging to one of my other home dwellers laying around and it quotes a celebrity claiming they eat what they want and workout for no longer than 30 minutes a day, doing something they love. They probably work just as hard as Pink, if not harder. At least she admits it, though.

But wow, 2.5 hours for 6 days a week! No wonder she looks so good! I’d say she comes close to Jessica Biel’s title as the fittest female celebrity of 2009.

Rounding Up 2009: The Fittest Male Celebrity

Wow. I couldn’t agree more.

Fitsugar readers have voted Taylor Lautner as the hottest fittest male celebrity of 2009.

Jordan Yuam (his trainer) has to be very good. There aren’t many details available, but from what I read on Men’s Health, he hit the gym at least 5 times a week for 2 hours, and took in a lot of protein.

I also read a rumor somewhere in a tiblid (another of my home dwellers is obsessed with all-things-Hollywood) that he had to have taken some steroids. The tiblid justified the claim using this picture:

Apparently it is supposed to be impossible to gain 26 pounds of muscle at this age, and at such a short time.

I don’t really think it matters.

He is definitely the fittest celebrity of the year. And it looks like he worked SO hard for it. I totally admire his efforts.

I should probably list the other options were, but I can’t think of anybody who was that Hot and Fit this year! Although Kellan Lutz, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds look like they were working it.

Looks Like a Count Down

Since the weather is still crappy (we reached -10C this afternoon – believeable for December here!) I am still not running outside. I am trying to convince myself that a) its okay b) I will run this weekend c) the temperatures are supposed to be better next week and finally d) I need to acquire the appropriate gear first.

So I did another P90X Interval X session which rocked my socks but I definitely won’t be doing it again tomorrow because I am about to get sick of it.

Wait for tomorrow – I will let you know which one I did + review! Oh, and you should know that PINK is also a fan of P90X. More on that later!
